BAD PITCH WRITERS Intro Class

* UPCOMING LA sessionS : OCTOBER 27, NOV 3, 10 & 17 12-3pm.

It doesn’t matter if you have been writing for years or just nervously tip-toeing into the terrifying world of writing:  it doesn't get any easier. Screenwriting is hard.

Whether it’s a comedy-horror mashup or a silent web series told in reverse, this class builds the foundational skills required to build any script as well as a shared language used in lab.

The Bad Pitch Writers Intro Class structure involves a lecture/discussion portion, as well as exposure to the lab experience by workshopping material: whether it's just a logline, a few images, or your first five pages. The Bad Pitch Writers Intro Lab integrates theory with practice, and introduces you to lab format.

Each lecture/discussion portion focuses on different building blocks necessary for effective storytelling: structure, character, visual storytelling, dialogue, and more.

Those same tools can then be applied to any project going forward, so you can continue to work on new content, new ideas, and never stop typing.

ONGOING LAB

advanced lab WITH ALEXA: MONDAYS 3-6pm & 7-10pm
ONGOING lab: TUESDAYS 12-3pm

During each weekly session, Lab members put up material from what they're actively working on: script pages, story cards, outlines, pitches, budgets, and more.

The material is then workshopped, discussed, and sharpened.

The teaching and guidance is focused on both the craft and the business of writing, as well as the art and the practicality.  These must exist in tandem, all while not losing sight of the love of storytelling that brought us all to this business to begin with.

Ever read a screenplay book and feel like it’s just… teaching formula?

That’s because it is.

So many of the screenwriting tools we have are dedicated to procedural learning

Bad Pitch Writers Lab is dedicated to conceptual learning.  Because your “page 10” might come on page 9.  Or 13.  But, if you understand why you NEED a page 10, then you’ll always be able to put it in the right place.

It’s about storytelling, not formula.

bad pitch, great buzz . . .

I’ve always had a passion for writing, but was intimidated by screenwriting. Alexa’s lab gave me the tools I needed to make screenwriting accessible and help me find my voice as a writer. Through her introductory course and lab, I’ve worked on developing a full season of a web series. I recently filmed the pilot and couldn’t be more excited to finish the rest.
— EMILY MCLEOD - Monday advanced LAB
Bad Pitch Writers Lab gives you the permission, the space, and the supportive community to call yourself a WRITER and get WRITING. Alexa is a genius at honing in on your unique learning style and gently challenging what you think your creative limits are. As a working writer, she mixes real-world business practicality and personal anecdotes with the foundational writing blocks required to succeed in the biz. Lab guides you past the blank page, gets you writing, and keeps you accountable to yourself and your fellow Lab-ers. If you’re looking to be part of a community of writers who aren’t just writing, they’re producing, directing, starring in, and ultimately, MAKING their own stuff (or having it made!), Alexa’s Bad Pitch Writers Lab is where it’s at.
— MICHAEL LOMENDA - MONDAY advanced LAB
Alexa knows how to teach the art of storytelling by dissecting process and sharing how to lay the foundation for your script. She saves you hours of rewriting by giving you the tools to thoroughly prep and guides you in finding the most effective way to write your script. Her lab is creative, logical and gives you consistency in your writing journey.
— - Elise Sievert - Monday advanced lab
I’ve got a messy brain and an overload of ideas that Alexa somehow manages to work through to help frame a strong story. MY story. She’s amazing at that. She brings a mathematical structure without stunting any creative growth. Listen to what she says. Ask all the questions. Take notes. Learn. From the best. That’s Alexa.
— Tessa Rae - advanced Monday lab

As a fellow writer and actor herself, Alexa deeply believes that collaboration and creativity shouldn’t come at an un-affordable cost, so the price of Lab is intentionally kept as low as possible.

I wanted to have more impact on the world than just assist in the telling of other people’s stories, but writing intimidated me. I had bought all the go-to books, but they left me feeling boxed in, and disconnected from my voice. Alexa taught me everything that i needed to know in a way that wasn’t overly complicated, and that I intuitively understood as an actor. But more importantly, she gave me the inspiration and encouragement that I truly needed, and her high expectations freed me from my own limiting beliefs.
— DANIELLE LANGLOIS - MONDAY advanced LAB
I didn’t know anything about structure, act breaks, inciting incidents or meet cutes. Alexa broke it all down so fast and so simply, that now it all feels like second nature. Ideas are always encouraged and enhanced and never shot down. I love Alexa’s writing class. I now have pilots and features written, and just wrote and directed my first short film. Not only did this class open me up to the world of writing, but also filmmaking. I encourage any actor considering opening themselves up to writing to jump into this class.
— Dom Burgess - Monday advanced Lab
This class is a game/life changer! I had never written a word before signing up for Alexa’s class. Now, I’ve finished the 5th draft of my first feature, wrote and produced my first short film, and have gotten into 8 film festivals. Alexa is particularly brilliant at helping you develop your own voice so you walk away feeling a deep sense of confidence that your work is uniquely yours. Taking class from a working actor and writer is a huge part of what makes this class unique. Everything Alexa learns on a daily basis, she brings into class. It’s been amazing to see how much everyone’s writing has improved over the course of a year or two. I can’t recommend this class enough.
